Words from the Chief
Hello Brothers,
Hungteetsepoppi Lodge
2011 Event Calendar 8th Annual PoppiFest Fellowship - Ordeal/Brotherhood Weekend Lodge Business Meeting Piedmont Council Lodge Spring BBQ Section W3S Conclave Fall Ordeal Weekend Fall Lodge Banquet NOAC 2012
The National OA Conference has always been my favorite OA event, and I've now attended NOACs at six different college campuses. The 2012 NOAC will be at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. The tentative date for the 2012 NOAC is July 30th through August 4th, 2012 |
It didn't look good going into the week before the scheduled PoppiFest a couple of weeks ago. Persistant rain was falling, and the ground was saturated and muddy. A quick email to Camp Augusta confirmed that conditions were sloppy, even days before the weekend. Weather reports indicated rain and possible snow from Friday through the weekend. Forrest, Rick and Kevin pondered the potential outcome for the weekend, which included a miserable experience for the candidates, little possible work, indoor ceremonies and more. On the Wednesday night before, we reluctantly called the weekend due to rain. Luckily, the weatherpeople were correct, and the weekend was a major storm. 5" of rain here at home, and snow and rain at camp. The solution was to reschedule PoppiFest to the weekend of April 29th to May 1st. We know that this interferes with a Troop 1 outing , and we appoligize for the conflict! We hope you will consider joining us on the new date. Ordeal and Brotherhood ceremonies will be held, and of course, the Carnival on Saturday night. Sign-up forms are on the lodge website! Cub Overnight at Coyote Hills
On February 12-13th, several lodge youth and adults headed down to Coyote Hills for the annual Cub Outreach Overnight. While the Cub turnout was slight, and the OA youth outnumbered the cubs, we all had a great time. The weather was great, and Forrest, Kellan, Tom and Carson led the cubs on hikes and a campfire. Dr. Byl brought his knot trainer, and taught the cubs basic knots. Dinner was a Dutch Oven feast, with S'mores and brownies for desert. After the campfire, we all sat around the dwindling fire and enjoyed S'more and conversation. Renzo joined us early Sunday morning, and after an early breakfast, we all packed up and headed home. Many thanks to Forrest, Tom, Kellan, Carson, Renzo, Misters Faison, Clark, Stewart, Turner, Fischer, and Dr. Byl for their time and dedication! For years, the Order of the Arrow has pioneered the concept of the service adventure with the OA High Adventure Programs. In 2008, the Order its first national service project, ArrowCorps5. Now in 2011, the Order of the Arrow is providing another opportunity to blend the bliss that comes from cheerful service and the personal growth that can only come from a high adventure opportunity. Service to the New River Gorge National River is the focus of SummitCorps, but the fun from recreation, brotherhood, and being in the wilderness will make the experience that much richer. The site of the SummitCorps The New River Experience is a part of the National Park Service of the US Department of the Interior. More than 70,000 acres surrounds the New River where there is an abundance of flora and fauna, recreational opportunities, and natural surroundings to enhance the experience of Arrowmen attending SummitCorps in 2011. SummitCorps will be offered in four identical one-week sessions (July 3-9, 10-16, 17-23, and 24-30). The program will be centered on trail building and environmental conservation projects and is intended for arrowmen and adults who are healthy and able to provide cheerful service throughout the day in an outdoor environment. Philmont health and weight standards apply. Lodges are able to send contingents to the program week of their choice (space available, of course). Each one-week session is $250 per participant, plus the cost of transportation. Participants must register and travel as part of a council/lodge contingent.
